No Maur'waste

For a Mauritius island
with no waste

Reducing Waste, Empowering Communities, and Creating a Sustainable Future

Imagine our island with no plastic on the beach,

no garbage in the forest

and no residual construction material in our streets

This is our dream

and this is only possible with YOU

Our vision

Our dream is to make Mauritius the first Zero Waste island in the world. We must act now to preserve natural beauty and prevent the deterioration of our environment.

To achieve this ambitious goal, we must promote a philosophy of waste reduction, reuse and recycling at all levels of our society. We count on the active participation of all Mauritians, from local residents to tourists, to adopt responsible and environmentally friendly consumption practices.

In our vision, each person will feel responsible for managing their own waste. We will encourage the use of sustainable and recyclable materials and create an efficient collection system to ensure proper waste management. Businesses and industries will also have a key role to play in adopting sustainable production methods and minimizing their impact on the environment

Together, we can make Mauritius a Zero Waste paradise, where nature is preserved, waste is minimized and future generations can enjoy a healthy and sustainable environment. Join us in this bold vision and work together to build a better future for all.

What is Zero Waste ?

Zero waste is a lifestyle aimed at reducing the amount of waste we generate, with the goal of sending nothing to landfills or incinerators.

In Mauritius, this is especially important because the island’s waste disposal resources are limited, and much of the waste ends up polluting the environment.

The zero waste approach encourages people to adopt practices like reducing consumption, reusing items, and recycling materials that cannot be reused. For example, instead of buying bottled water, people can use reusable water bottles. Or, instead of using plastic bags, they can bring cloth bags when shopping. Composting food scraps, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting businesses that use sustainable packaging are other ways to embrace zero waste.

Adopting these practices helps reduce the environmental impact, conserves natural resources, and leads to a cleaner and greener Mauritius for future generations.

The best waste is the waste we don’t produce !

The benefits of Zero Waste

  • Environmental Protection: Zero waste reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, cutting down pollution, methane emissions, and the harmful effects of incineration. This helps protect ecosystems, wildlife, and air and water quality.

  • Conservation of Resources: By reducing, reusing, and recycling, zero waste conserves natural resources like water, energy, and raw materials, preventing the over-extraction of these finite resources.

  • Cost Savings: For both individuals and businesses, adopting zero-waste practices can lead to financial savings. Buying less, reusing products, and reducing packaging can lower costs over time.

  • Job Creation: Recycling, composting, and other zero-waste industries often create more jobs than traditional waste disposal, supporting local economies and encouraging green innovation.

  • Improved Public Health: Reducing waste decreases the need for landfills and incinerators, which can release harmful toxins and pollutants into the air and water, thus improving public health.

  • Climate Change Mitigation: Waste reduction plays a critical role in combating climate change by lowering greenhouse gas emissions associated with waste management processes and the production of new materials.
